I am a writer and educator with a first book of poems, Encounter Between Cuentos and Versos. These poems are mini stories about growing up in Puerto Rico and living in the U.S. as an adult. This is the background in which the poetry here reflects on family, culture, on individual dreams, failures and triumphs.
This site is inspired by my faith in words. Words are powerful, whether you are reading, writing, speaking or listening. The Spanish word for power is el poder, but poder also means in Spanish to be able to do something.
La palabra es poder: The word is power and empowerment.
“One isn’t necessarily born with courage, but one is born with potential. Without courage, we cannot practice any other virtue with consistency. We can’t be kind, true, merciful, generous or honest.”
– Maya Angelou
What I intend to do here is to establish a safe home where I can stir you and remind myself to slow down and pay attention to words as readers, writers, learners, and teachers. Attention leads to courage and courage opens el poder, the power to do.
“Not everything you write is going to be a masterpiece. Not everything you cook is great, not everything you paint—but you are trying for it. From the moment you put the pen to paper or sit down at the piano, you’re trying for it.”
– Maya Angelou
